Pinsker, who lives in Maryland, also uses different voices and approaches in her work - not surprisingly, because she’s a singer-songwriter, too. What ties many of the stories together is Pinsker’s exploration of disturbing trends in the world today, such as the rise of AI and surveillance technology, and the ways in which technology in general threatens human connections. ![]() It’s the second Pinsker collection Small Beer has released. ![]() “Lost Places,” published by Small Beer Press in Easthampton, pulls together 12 stories by Pinsker, including some of her more celebrated and longer stories, such as “Two Truths and a Lie,” with some of her less well-known tales, and one new story. Epic fantasy has been big in the last couple of years, with the massive success of Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings and Hobbit trilogies, as well as that of HBO’s adaptation of George R.R. ![]() ![]() What I love about our people is that we have a limit to the frustration we experience before we make that plan. ![]() ![]() What if in a year’s time, the government gets its act together and we have power 24-7? Okay, I had to throw that in to be positive, but I can hear everyone looking at me as if to say, “Don’t be ridiculous!” It isn’t an easy decision, and in some cases, it’s a huge investment in the unknown. That is, other than those who have already taken the leap and want to be able to convince you – and themselves – that they made the right choice. I would have been irritated with this, but the truth is, I also need to hear what they’re saying because I’m trying to figure out my own power plans. Though I really want to talk about the Rabbitt Reloaded concert that was going to happen but isn’t, and what it was like to meet three of the original members of the band 45 years after having been a Rabbitt fan, everyone wants to talk about solar. See, I get invested in the stories I love, but I’ve never been the kind of fan who constantly needs new content to keep my attention from wandering. So you can imagine how excited I was when I learned that Pullman was planning to revisit his best-known work in a new “equel” trilogy called The Book of Dust. Or maybe you can’t imagine, because the answer was “not very.” The Amber Spyglass in particular has an awful lot to answer for when it comes to my future career choices (damn you, Pullman, if you’d just let Lyra and Will stay together, I could have my student loans paid off by now). Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials trilogy is one of my life’s most enduring obsessions. This post contains spoilers for every volume in His Dark Materials and The Book of Dust. ![]() |
